HR 1162 Is The Best Way To Protect Online Schools

Since the May 16, 2011 Georgia Supreme Court ruling against the Georgia Charter Schools Commission, a coalition of charter school supporters has been working to find a long term solution to protect the jeopardized schools.  Working with the Georgia House and Senate leaders and the Governor Deal's office, charter school supporters determined that an amendment to the Georgia Constitution is the best way to ensure these schools stay open for years to come.

Georgia Cyber Academy and Georgia Connections Academy are among the schools jeopardized by the Supreme Court ruling!

Last week House Resolution 1162 (HR 1162) was introduced by Representative Jan Jones (R-46th), and co-signed by Representatives Brooks Coleman (R-97th), Alisha Morgan (D 39th), Edward Lindsey (R-54th)), Margaret Kaiser (D-59th), and Matt Hatchett (143rd ) as the answer to the controversial Supreme Court decision.  HR 1162 is designed to reassert the state's role in public education which is already assumed by most of the general public.

Recent polling shows overwhelming support for the constitutional amendment protecting state charter schools if it is placed on the ballot in November 2012. However, HR 1162 must first receive a two-thirds majority vote in the Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate.  Gaining a two-thirds majority vote will require bi-partisan support for the resolution.

Right now, many of your representatives are not sure how they are going to vote.  We need their support to help pass this critical resolution. Please take the time to contact your state legislator, and tell them that you support House Resolution 1162 by clicking here.
